New head coach for the men’s soccer team at SCAD Savannah
Darren Spong, previously the assistant coach for SCAD Savannah’s women’s team, has been named the new head coach for the men’s program. Athletic Director Doug Wollenburg said:
“Darren will be a great role model and mentor to his new recruits and current artist-athletes on the roster. He brings a positive and contagious enthusiasm to his coaching style along with a methodology that will provide an immediate boost to the program and catapult the SCAD Men’s soccer program back to the top of The Sun Conference and national level!”
Spong is a former player for the Bees, making the All-Conference team in 2007. He began his playing career in the academy of Portsmouth and served an apprenticeship with AFC Bournemouth. Prior to joining the women’s program as an assisting coach, Spong spent time coaching at SSA Savannah United, St. Andrews High School, Benedectine Military School where he won state championships at both the high school and club levels.
Spong said:
“I am extremely honored and proud to be named as the new head coach for the SCAD men’s soccer program. I will be forever thankful to the women’s soccer program and coach Gunn for the past three seasons. However, I am at the right time in my coaching career to step into the prestigious role as SCAD men’s soccer head coach. I am excited and eager to implement my own coaching philosophies and training methods to help nurture the talented student artist-athletes here at SCAD.”
The Bees went 8-9-1 in 2016, losing in The Sun Conference quarterfinals to end their season in November.
