“Match Week”: Jason Discusses The All-Star Game

atlutd-97

((HT: Fox SportsSouth))

Jason had another tour with Brittany Arnold to discuss everything involving the #5Stripes as they head toward their match in Orlando this weekend…

The question was about the guy above and his impact to the team…

For the record, Brittany will be on SDH Wednesday morning at 930…

Longshore Previews Atlanta United and NYCFC

Atlanta United color commentator and SDH Top Dawg was a guest with Emily Gagnon on the Saturday Sports product discussing the United-NYCFC match and was asked about the absence of “Tata” Martino on the touch line…

“The Monday Rear View” Looks At A Complete Effort

That guy had a full day…

And SDH will be the firsts to say the league had it wrong…

THIS ONE IS THE GOAL OF THE WEEK

Don’t misunderstand… this first one was ridiculous… Just not AS ridiculous…

And, yes, Kevin Egan it was a peach… as he channeled his inner Martin Tyler on the call… absolute purity…

But the entire evening was worth hanging on to for different reasons…

The Anthem… which should be in the supporters’ hands from now on…

The crowd… who gets major props for hanging out in a monsoon and a stadium clearance…

And the sign of the Waffle House marquis with “Atlanta United- 200k served…” is pretty accurate… and very clever…

Tata has a great first touch… still…

And WHATCHA GONNA DO???!!! WHEN GRESSELMANIA RUNS. WILD. ON. YOU.

Honestly, the only thing missing in one of those celebrations is the ripping of the kit- which, admittedly, would send the crowd into abject hysterics…

And, maybe, a little flexing pose-down for good measure…

But, as we write, NYCFC is heading to town and they’re hot off a big win in Orlando- which was regarded as one of the toughest places to play in the league…

Here’s how 3 were put on the board pretty quickly…

((HT: MLS))

But the field will be just a BIT wider and more suited for Atlanta United play…

What’s past is past, but it’s a good reference point for the future…

What do you remember the most…??? And what will you take with you..???

Another Episode of “When Electronics Fail”

Football_Pallo_valmiina-cropped

A lot of you in the SDH footprint knew about (and were, probably, present) when this happened over the weekend…

But this one happened in Chattanooga… same issue, same solution…

Good on you both!

Nicely done… and the HQ thinks that the solution might be right in front of us all for future anthems…

Atlanta United Now Knows US Open Cup Path

20170318-A97A0529 ((HT: The US Open Cup their own selves))

The grid came out Thursday morning for the next few rounds of the all-in tournament

Here’s the look…

So, all we get is the chance of another New York Derby, another round of Cascadia, and Atlanta United taking on either Charleston or the Jacksonville Armada…

Whaddya think…???

The Monday Rear View: Get Back…

atlutd-265

WHATCHA GONNA DO, BROTHER…???!!!

The short answer is: “Get Back…”

After six of seven on the road, it’s time for the Concrete and Cherry Pie kits to be put away more often than not…

And, prevailing opinion taking hold here, the team might be a week or two away from being at full song since the Minnesota United match- and we all know how that went. First things first, though, congratulations to The Ol’ 2-4 for this moment in Portland

Going deeper here… it’s something that the side can file away as an interesting wrinkle to the line-up. With Gressel and Almiron switching places on this run- Gressel inside and Almiron out- it gave the opportunity that created the goal. The defense went with Almiron as Gressel leaked in behind and shot with his left.

1-nil…

And you have to give it up for keeper Alec Kann, who is making it very difficult for Brad Guyzan when he shows up- even as United asked if Middlesbrough would let him go early… and they STILL said “no” after being relegated…

The fans didn’t want him around any more, did they, after 2 nutmegs in the 3-0 loss to Chelsea…???

But back to Kann… four more saves to boost his total to 34 and this one late kept it tied at ones… thanks to the Timbers their own selves…

Possession was taking advantage of the situation in the midfield left by the absence of Darlington Nagbe and Atlanta showed patience and pace. Just “SHOOT,” okay…???

But Adi made no friends on the Atlanta side with this page out of the Maradona playbook: Hashtag “Sistine Chapel”

And Alan Kelly made no friends- especially after not calling… what’s the word we’re looking for… oh, yeah… “A LOT!”

And that’s one of the more tame responses… Here’s the highlights to watch stuff for yourself, thanks to ESPN and MLS their own selves…

And, if you want to itemize the whole match go here- until it gets pulled…

The match with Houston could be FIFA 17 revisited with all the speed around- Quioto, Elis, Manotas, and Cubo Torres versus Atlanta…

Find your seat belts, y’all…

The Monday Rear View (On A Tuesday): R-E-L-A-X

Let’s just start things this way, courtesy of a Green Bay QB:

And, I know, that you may not want the whole thing, but here’s the highlights… Or, if you’re an Atlanta United fan… the highlights from the first 20 minutes and the rest of the match…

So, Dear Reader… What say you about the two different matches you saw on a Sunday…???

If the two overlaps that gave Tito Villaba point-blank opportunities that were parried by the all-worldy Bill Hamid in the DCU net, this. game. is. over. That, I think, we can all agree on.

(sidebar: DCU fans need to keep an eye on Hamid’s hamstring/quad which seemed to get tweaked in a scrum in the first half. It led to other players reintroducing the ball into play. Travis Worra warmed up on the side of the pitch getting ready if Hamid couldn’t continue for DCU. It would have been a bit of a drop off, but Worra started in 13 matches in 2016 and had four clean sheets.)

I know that we all look at “Tata” Martino’s game and think something like this every single offensive possession:

((HT: Warner Brothers Pictures))

And, yes, I know that was “Major League 2” instead of the original…

How do you adjust…??? The league now has a book on you as a starting pitcher… How do you change your pitching approach now that folks know what they’re looking at…

Who works…? Who works where…? Who’s healthy…? All that stuff… There’s nothing wrong with trying to run the opposition out of the building, but when the roster isn’t at full song it takes some adjustments.

But, look at the DCU match this way…

It’s not one of those situations where the wheels COMPLETELY fell off, but it is something to look at going forward. DC United stifled Atlanta United in the midfield by clogging it all up- even moreso when they had a lead. The air was taken out of the ball and, when you look at the numbers, it showed. But it showed differently…

If that makes any sense… All the time of possession advantage meant was they held the ball trying to find something to do with it… and DCU wouldn’t let them…

Here’s some empirical proof… thanks to our friends at Analysis Evolved…

Larentowicz. Asad. Peterson. The return of Goslin and Carleton. The DisCo on elbows.

Those questions remain as the team heads to Yankee Stadium and Portland- trying to get some points on the road that they’re not getting (surprisingly) at home…

But Tom Petty presents the last point for the day…

Everything will be okay…

The Monday Rear View: Bring A Sweater

Full props to SDH Major Domo Jason Longshore who predicted the final score and nailed the perfecta- all we need to do now is take the man to the horse track and cash in quickly…

Unfortunately, he would have to travel out of state to make that happen- or chase an OTB joint down somewhere…

Here’s your proof he was 100% correct…

((HT: MLS))

And what you saw was two musicians trying to play frantically on stage, but only one of the bands could keep the beat… Think of the bands you listen to and how they are live in concert… Some come out on stage, play for 1:45 without a break and get on the bus. Then, you have a band that knows how to go off on solos, but can come back to square and complete the show before curfew…

Example…

14 minutes, everyone gets a solo, and the song is a different version of one you knew off the album when you bought it (and, yes, I just dated myself with the vinyl reference).

Or, look at it this way… one statistic that you look at that has NO MEANING whatsoever with this particular approach with Atlanta United is the “dreaded time of possession” stat. Short of a Chicago-10 man situation where the percentage is an 80-20 dominance, it will be rare for the Five Stripes to lead in the category.

Phrase of advice: Do not get wrapped up in this… At. All. Example- Real Salt Lake had a 55-45 percentage advantage and we saw what happened…

Another antiquated reference… Remember this offense from, oh, 30 years ago…???

All the weapons Jim Kelly had in Houston (or Kurt Warner in St. Louis) had one objective- and to be quick about it…

Bottom line: If you know where you’re going and the other guy has to react to what you already know, you’re a step ahead in the game…

That should be the way to approach the upcoming match with DC United…

Act and react, force the hand, and the three points should be there…

What say you, fellow SDH’ers…??? Play it safe, everyone… We’ll see you soon…

The Monday Rear View: Montreal Screwjob 2.0

Okay, folks…

The first thing that came to mind was this…

Admittedly, here’s the highlights of the match and there’s a lot of them. But there are a lot of different ways to look at them… Thanks to our friends at TSN and MLS

So, here’s some random thoughts… If LGP gets a red, why didn’t Cabrera for his clip in the midfield…??? Why wasn’t Piatti carded for being, well, Piatti…???

I could see the notion of a penalty in all of this on the joust with LGP, but not a red. It seemed like there was enough competition scrambling for the ball to go around…

But that’s just me… It might be you as well…

It’s easy to say that United got screwed on a last-second, deflection of all deflections by Jackson-Hamel. And it was the definition of fluky… That is easy to see…

The larger question is: Where do you go from here…???

The loss has to be shaken off sooner than you think because the road trip to Rio Tinto is not going to be an easy one… Evidence below on a much-improved (for whatever reason) Mike Petke-led side now… thanks to our friends at Altitude Sports:

Do you burn the tape from Montreal…??? Don’t think so… maybe just the last four minutes…

We learned that Kenwyne Jones can work up top. We learned that this side can stay on the edge, but we also learned that United are getting an instant reputation (earned or not) as a chippy, physical side that will mix it up when they have to…

Which leads to all those cards and the unnecessary reds that are getting dished out…

We also learned that Mark Bloom can work and we also learned that Chris McCann needs regular minutes.

One last thing, well actually two…

I CAN’T WAIT for the tifo in the Woosnam End for the first home match back for the guys and where’s the “Bless Your Heart” chant that I am calling for, y’all…??? Actually, I just remembered… There has to be a red card AGAINST Atlanta United for that to happen…

On to Rio Tinto, y’all… Then, the boys are back…

And speaking of embracing the heel, let’s just go all-in shall we…???

Steve… Here’s your intro music for the home return…

BLACK AND WHITE WARM-UP KITS FOR EVERYONE!

Carry on… Play it safe, everyone… We’ll be watching!

The Monday Rear View: Swim Move Or Red Card…???

To use the word “gut check” seems to be a little trite…

But there is something to admit, when Atlanta United went a man down, the team got a little sand in the cleats of Big Red and got out of town with a 2-2 draw…

((HT: MLS))

Two draws on the road in two tough environments- and two roadtrips to go in two more tough environments- Montreal and Rio Tinto…

But with the absence of Yamil Asad (and the #FreeYamil hashtag wandering around already even if the suspension is stuck at only one match- as it really should…), it will be interesting to see how the team lines up in a winnable match against a team that looks like the middle of the field is not their friend so far this season.

Winless in their first five and only playing their second match at home all season, Stade Saputo is one of those places that can come up and bite you. They should be without Marco Donadel who picked up a red on his own in the Impact match against the LA Galaxy- a possible turning point in that match as well.

Don’t think that the team can just go into Saputo and come out with three points…

You know what it feels like, Dear Reader, when you’re only in the middle of something that’s going to be a drag. You look for the end of the road…

Can’t do that this week or next if you think that you can beat an internal goal before your task started… Can you…? Especially if you’re in the top half above the red line…

We’ll see how they respond… One last thing…

Here’s the question that has been burning up every Atlanta United social media element since it went down…???

SDH’s Jarrett Smith called this a “swim move.”

The refs called it a red card… what say you…???
