The Monday Rear View: CRACKERS!

The first question for Atlanta United after their inaugural match at Bobby Dodd Stadium:

Who is Uncle Arthur Blank’s tailor…???

And it was interesting to hear Mister Blank reference three separate conversations he had with MLS Commissioner Don Garber during the week:

“He called me three times and he asked me if I had the attendance numbers right this week. ‘Are you sure that’s how many people?’ Yes, that’s the right number. Then he would call again, ‘Are you SURE that‘s the right number?’ Yes ,that’s the right number. And he’d call again. ‘You SURE?’

And the number was right…

We even had tifo…

We have #tifo #atlutd #SoccerDownHere

Lead official Mark Geiger made no friends early on whistling United’s first possession and the 55,000 sounded a lot more than that- the front office’s goal (pardon the pun) from the beginning.

But, if you had Yamil Asad at the back post with the clean-up and a moment of history… you won your pool… in the 26th

Commissioner Garber was available at the break (and SDH would like to apologize for the audio misfires from our Instagram account in the middle of the interview). He understood the need to play here for the time being, but if Bobby Dodd was the plan for the permanent venue “… we probably be talking about a team here in town.” And those discussions, remember, date back to 2008.

Garber admitted that he was “speechless” over the numbers in the house, though…

And, admit it, if Miguel Almiron had lifted that lob wedge over Luis Robles in the 67th to make it 2-0, Cal Tech would have felt the seismic shock left  behind. Some United fans even decided that they would have stripped naked on the spot…

Yes, social media, I am talking about you… all 55,297 of you… and then some- like in Sydney, Australia… mad props to you by the way…

But, as Red Bulls are wont to do, they make a lot of their action off set pieces. Off a back side corner kick, Daniel Royer evened it up in the 76th. Bradley Wright-Phillips gave the visitors the lead in the 82nd working in the box against Anton Walkes for the own goal and they held on for the win.

Or, if you’re Bradley Wright-Phillips… he touched it enough for a goal credit…

All in all, the debut was missing only one thing and games down the line need to be without one other thing… The chant on the goal kicks…??? Got to go…

Here’s the Dirty South Soccer piece as to why four letters have no business on The Flats or at MBS… Anywhere in the game, really… if you look the word up in your Larousse- it’s not nice- and the southeast soccer fan is better than that…

On to Minnesota for the battle of the maidens with a lot of positives, a lot to be proud of, and a lot more ground to cover…

What say you, dear reader…???
